BlacKkKlansman

Like most typical movie-goers, I prefer to watch a trailer for a film before taking the plunge to go and see it on the big screen. Preparing to go and see BlacKkKlansman was no different. I watched the trailer before the film, and was excited to watch Spike Lee’s new film, which seemed like a comedy… how wrong I was.

Most new films I go and see, I don’t really do any research into, apart from watching the trailer, and so it’s no surprise that this one caught me out. If you are looking to go and watch a laugh out loud comedy, BlacKkKlansman is not for you. Whilst the film is definitely packed with lighter, funny moment and topics, the film is based on racial inequality in the past, highlighting how some things have changed, and how some things, sadly, have not.

Without spoiling the film too much **please be advised of some spoilers** the story is based around the first black Police Officer in Colorado Springs. Ron Stallworth is initially employed to work in the records room at the Colorado Police Department until he begins to work undercover and is assigned to infiltrate a local civil rights rally.

Afterward, Stallworth is reassigned to the intelligence division, and after reading an incredibly blatant newspaper advertisement decides to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. Sending his colleague Flip Zimmerman in as his double, so the KKK would not know that Stallworth has infiltrated them.

However, he continues to speak to them on the telephone and even ends up speaking to the notorious White Supremacist, David Duke. As Stallworth goes in deeper, he deflects a plot to begin a race war in Colorado when some of the KKK decides to try and plant a bomb.

I think films like BlacKkKlansman are incredibly important for everyone to watch. It seems like an obvious race lesson, of respect, equality and acceptance, however, it’s the fact that we still haven’t grasped these concepts in 2018 that makes BlacKkKlansman all the more important to watch.
