Top 5 Movies Of The Summer

Another blockbuster summer has been and gone. As usual, there were some films that surpassed all expectations, blowing away any audience in their wake. There were also complete duds. Films that disappointed on a massive scale. In this article I'm going to go through my Top 5 Movies of the Summer. How many of them have you seen? Is there any film that I've left out? Let me know!

5. Deadpool 2

There was a lot of expectation placed on the sequel for the merc with a mouth. The original came out of nowhere to rewrite the superhero rulebook, and this time Ryan Reynolds' anti-hero didn't have the element of surprise. We needn't have worried though, as Deadpool 2 was a big, bolder, funnier movie, with slicker action sequences, and a great supporting cast. It expanded the universe, whilst keeping true to Deadpool's routes.

4. Sicario 2

Another sequel which had a lot riding on it. Sicario 2 returned without Emily Blunt, and without director Denis Villeneuve, placing Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin front and centre. They more than carry what is a tense and shocking movie, which dives deeper into the themes set out in the first film. This is a thriller with soul.

3. Incredibles 2

I know, another sequel. It's a trend that is all too familiar in the multiplex these days, but who can argue against them when they're as great as this. Whilst it doesn't quite hit the heights of the first movie, this is a more than worthy sequel. It's laugh-out-loud funny and contains some of the best action sequences seen this year.

2. Hereditary

The only film on this list that isn't a sequel, this was a great piece of counter-programming, giving audiences a break from blockbusters. Billed as the scariest movie of all time, Hereditary isn't jump out of your seat frightening, but it gets under your skin and stays with you weeks after you've seen it. It's a deeply disturbing film which owes a debt to Rosemary's Baby, and The Exorcist. A true instant classic.

1. Mission Impossible: Fallout

Who would have thought that the sixth Mission Impossible was going to be the best one? I know I didn't, but Fallout is blockbuster filmmaking at the top of its game. Combining elements of all the previous MI films, and delving into what makes Ethan Hunt tick, this film showcased some of the best action ever captured on film. After ten minutes your jaw will be on the floor, and it will stay there until the end credits have rolled.

It's been an incredible summer, and I'm sure I've missed a few of your favourites, so let me know what your favourite movie of the summer was.
